newspeak

oooh! just to note: it's 10.43pm on finals night and i have a russian lit paper due tomorrow and i have spanish to memorise that i haven't started and i have ir and gods i'm so dead but anyways my russian lit paper is on doublespeak during the soviet era (which by the way is not the same as newspeak and was not coined by orwell but certainly owes influences to it) and i just wasted one hour of my life on texttwist (but i got a high score of 140,980 aha beat that so maybe not all so bad who am i kidding) andandand ooh isn't that interesting.

i am NOT freaking out.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHOAMITRYINGTOKID.

i am back with more linguistic gems from the green service.

i have pondered over two more words. doublejob and paperplay. those who have read 1984 will notice how they seem to be words out of a Newspeak dictionary.

doublejob implies an action or set of actions that increase one's workload redundantly. the same outcome/output can be achieved through a subset of that action or set of actions alone. it must be noted that the solution to the problem is contained within the action or set of actions in the doublejob, just that it is mixed with needless excesses.

paperplay refers to the alteration of paper work to suit the situation. this can mean either backdating a document, or forging certain details to paint a picture prematurely, et cetera. it must be noted that paperplay is not forgery in the incriminating sense of the word. paperplay is done to give flexibility to situations, thereby cutting down the wastage of time and unnecessary burdens which are an unfortunate product of red tape.

quotable quote of the week by one of my instructors - "educated people like to use pen to kill people".

hey how about doing something after cher's dinner? or maybe even staying over somewhere? what do you guys think? we havent caught up as a group in ages... this idea came out of my conversation with leon a couple of days back.

there are many distortions of english in the green service. but one of them i like and find to be useful - wake up your idea. for greater emphasis, one can also say wake up your f--king idea. i have no idea where it originated. from my limited command of dialect and mandarin i find no grammatical basis for that statement. nor is it to be found in english.

this statement can be used in a few ways -

1. to rouse a person to action, from inaction "wake up your idea! you only have 4 hours left till 'A' levels!" (now thats freaky)

2. to bring a person back to earth "wake up your idea! think i dont know you've been slacking?"

3. to correct a false idea "wake up your idea! two plus two is five not four!"

beautiful, isnt it?

hello sonia nothing much has happened in singapore. except maybe that bush came to singapore and they changed the time of the O and A level exams to accomodate the potential disruption to traffic flow.

its been two years since our first trip!

hope to see you guys at cher's dinner.
